What is Hatha Yoga?
Hatha Yoga is an ancient, comprehensive science of working with the body and breath as a vehicle for personal transformation. This transformation can occur on multiple levels. On the physical level, yoga develops greater mobility, flexibility, and strength. On an energetic level, pathways of the subtle body are cleared, bringing greater energy and mental freedom. Ultimately, Hatha Yoga acts as a vehicle for releasing us from self-limitation, clearing the space of the heart and awakening us to who we truly are. |

Where do I start as a newcomer to the Yoga Shala?
We have four different programs of study at the Yoga Shala:
- Our Drop-In Classes are on-going classes which may be dropped into at any time. No pre-registration required. Just show up!
- Our three to five week Immersions are for those who want to commit to a daily practice and work in an intensive setting. Sign-up required.
- Workshops are for studying a particular topic.
- Teacher Training & Advanced Study are for one to three years of comprehensive study.
If you are completely new to yoga a good place to start is in 'Yoga FUNdamentals', a 'Gentle' class or a Level 1 ongoing class or immersion. Level 1 classes will establish a strong foundation for all the various styles of yoga.
If you are interested in a particular style of yoga, the various Level 1 ongoing classes and immersions of the different styles are very good for beginners and those who want a slower paced class than the stronger Level 2 classes. The Level 2 ongoing classes and immersions are our most vigorous and should be attempted by stronger students and preferably those with three to six months of recent yoga experience. |

Why are there so many styles of yoga?
Many styles of Hatha Yoga have developed since its introduction to America in the last century. These reflect the different needs and capacities of different students. Read the corresponding class descriptions for more on these styles. We also offer the related discipline of Pilates to complement your yoga practice. Ultimately there are as many different styles as there are teachers, and once you find a teacher you resonate with, try studying with them for a while to get the most out of your practice. |

When you come to class –
Please come to class with an empty stomach. Allow 1-2 hours after a light snack and 3-4 hours after a heavy meal. Allow even more time between meals and class for the shadow yoga classes. We don’t recommend drinking water during class as this interferes with the internal heating of the body. Wear comfortable clothing. No perfumes, body oils, or heavy jewelry please. Try to come to class a little early as we will start on time. Please notify the teacher if you are pregnant or have any prior or current injuries. |
