with Michael Stirling
Raga: Singing a Prism.
The Vocal Music of North India
Recital, Saturday, November 20, 7:00pm
8 weeks, Mondays, September 27 - November 15, 7:00 - 9:00pm
$135 before September 20, $160 thereafter
Nowhere in the world has the science of sound and music been investigated with such depth and sophistication as in ancient India, where a unique cultural tradition of yoga, spirituality and music has developed. The Vedas teach that music is the most important of the art forms, with the body as the instrument of expression. Accordingly, vocal music is given the highest significance.
India’s classical music today, exists as a direct descendant of these ancient traditions, preserved, elaborated and developed through the ages, and passed on orally from teacher to disciple, in the Guru-Shishya tradition.
This class will increase your increase your knowledge and broaden your understanding of the general elements of North Indian Classical Music (raga & tala) and its ancient cultural and historical elements.
Students will sing and learn several raga scales and also compositions in those ragas. The rhythmic aspect of Indian classical music (tala) will also be examined. The class will be accompanied by tambura (the essential drone instrument) and tabla (a set of two small hand drums). The class is taught in the Kirana style of North Indian classical vocal music – which traces its history back in time over 700 years ago to the colorful era of the mogul kings and to the legendary saint and singer Gopal Nayak, who worshipped Krishna, embraced Sufism and blended these elements into a spiritual form expressed in the language of music.
Teacher Training Course Elective 16 hours.
Open to everyone, no experience necessary.

ANATOMY & MOVEMENT with Wendy Hambidge – 101: Bones & Muscles
5 weeks, Wednesdays,
October 13 - November 17, 5:30 - 8:30pm
$270 for 101 only • Full Course $675
This series of anatomy classes use the principles of Body-Mind Centering®. The main tenant of BMC is that every part of our anatomy from micro to macro has the capacity for awareness. Not only does the mind influence the body, the body influences the mind. In this work we build awareness of the individual parts of our body. When the different systems (bones, muscles, organs, etc) of the body are clear about their specific roles, the relationship between the parts becomes more fluid and efficient. Touch, drawing, models, movement and somatic experiences are used to facilitate and understand the fascinating subject that is anatomy in these three courses.
In this beginning course we start with the bones and finish with the muscles. The skeleton provides the framework of our body. When the skeleton knows its role, the muscles can do less and movement will be more efficient. This will help bring clarity and ease to one’s yoga practice.
Teacher Training Required Course 15 hours • Full 4 Quarter Course 45 hours.
